Clearly stated position
Restate the prompt as a declarative sentence. For example, if the issue is whether the United States should impose tariffs on Chinese goods, your first sentence should be either: "The United States should impose tariffs on Chinese goods." ...or... "The United States should not impose tariffs on Chinese goods."
Do not begin your position statement with "I believe..." or "In my opinion..." You will receive no points for this criterion if you do that.

Reference readings for support
Make at least two references to the assigned readings or other credible sources to support your argument. You do not need to create a "works cited" list but you do need to reference a reading's author and title, and then explain how that reading supports your position.

State and rebut opposing argument
Anticipate your opponent's best argument and offer a rebuttal, e.g., “The opposing side will likely argue that tariffs on Chinese goods are necessary to protect jobs in the United States, however, as Matt Ridley explains in "The Rational Optimist," restrictions on trade are likely to make a both parties worse off in the long run.” You will receive one point for clearly stating the opposing argument and one point for persuasively rebutting it.
