Important!

Only simple math can be typed directly into your course. Any math/science notation that cannot be created with the keyboard's number pad must be created with the Canvas's built-in math editor to be even partially accessible. Do not use the superscript or subscript buttons in the Canvas toolbar to create math/science notations as text-to-speech and screen reader programs do not specify superscript and subscript formats by default (example: would be read as "three two").

In Canvas, open the page or post where the notation belongs and put the typing cursor where the equation should be added.
Put your typing cursor where equation should go.
Click Insert Math Equation.
Create the equation within the pop-up, using the numbers and letters on the keyboard and the symbols and formatting in the editor.
Click Insert Equation.
Click the Save button.

Additional Tips

When showing multiple steps, you shouldn't try to fit all of the steps into one session. Each step should have its own session to ensure proper coding.

Checking Your Work

To better determine if the notations were applied correctly, use the following process:

[Advanced] After inserting math or science notations, open a screen reader program, navigate to the notation, and listen.
- Some descriptions of the equations may not make sense if you aren't used to hearing it.
- You might need to install MathPlayer before the screen reader will read the notations correctly.
